The PhD in Design course of the Lisbon School of Architecture has generated more than 100 theses in design. Since 2017, the group REDES–Research & Education in Design has been mapping this significant body of work to get a detailed picture of doctoral research in design, including contextualisation, methodologies, and research results. The group’s findings will kick-off the discussion with the world-renowned design research expert Gjoko Muratovski on the future of doctoral research in design. We welcome feedback and engagement from the academic community present in the session and look forward to an exciting event.

The Lisbon School of Architecture, or simply “the School” as people call it, since it dates back to the 16th century, is now one of the 18 faculties and institutes belonging to the University of Lisbon, following the merger between the classical University of Lisbon and the Technical University of Lisbon in 2013. It is located in the Ajuda Campus in the west of Lisbon, on a hill close to Monsanto Forest Park, 20min from the city centre.

The Lisbon School of Architecture offers courses leading to undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees in the fields of Architecture, Urban Planning, Building Interiors and Renovation, Design and Fashion Design. It also offers non-degree courses that provide complementary training to professionals who wish to acquire more in-depth knowledge. This wide range of training makes the FA the largest and most diversified school in the country in its fields.

REDES conferences are organised by The Research & Education in Design group, which is a part of the Research Centre for Architecture, Urbanism and Design (CIAUD) at the Lisbon School of Architecture, Universidade de Lisboa (FA/ULisboa). The group was founded and is coordinated by Prof. Dr Rita Almendra, who chairs the REDES Conference series.

The first edition reinforced our belief that design educators need a dedicated space where they can more frequently discuss their approaches to research and education among their peers. We aim to build on 2019’s insightful event and push the discipline of Design forward in a time of enormous challenges on a global scale.

As we still live in the uncertainty of the mobility restrictions we may face at that time, we are preparing to host REDES2022 as a hybrid conference, to provide as much of the event as possible to those who find themselves unable to join us in Lisbon in May.

We found that much of the success of our first conference was due to the lively discussions taking place in informal settings between presentations, at mealtimes, during bus drives and leisure evenings, and so we hope to welcome as many of you as possible to our university next spring.
